Direct feed from my brain to your screen

You saw a shirt for $97. You didn’t have the cash, so you borrowed $50 from your mum and $50 from your dad = $100. You bought the shirt, and had $3 change. You gave your dad $1 and your mum $1 and kept the other $1 for yourself. Now you owe your mum $49 and your dad $49. 49+49 = 98 + your $1 = 99. Where is the missing $1?

48.5+48.5=97 

The trick here is that last addition. Let me explain.

What the riddle adds is this:

what you owe your mother + what you owe your father + what you have

What you should add is what everyone doesn’t have, relative to what they had before. That is to say, what everyone lost in the transaction. Your mother lost $50 to begin with, but got $1 back, so all told she lost $49. The same goes for your father. You had $0 to begin with and gained $1, so you lost -$1. (The general rule is that the sum of losses and gains equals the original amount. -$1 + $1 = $0)

So add up what everyone lost:

$49 + $49 -$1 = $97

So the entire cost of the shirt is accounted for.
